How to be active

Physical activity is any activity that gets your body moving, makes your breathing become quicker and your heart beat faster. There are many different ways that you can increase your activity and exercise each day.

Getting started

To get yourself motivated, you might join an organised exercise group such as yoga or go to the gym, start walking or swimming, take a dance class, or do some exercises at home.  Your health professional can help with designing a programme for you.

Or it may be simply a matter of spending more time on the things you already enjoy doing such as gardening or taking the dog for a walk.  Any physical activity is better than none. If you don’t do any exercise, start by doing some, and gradually build up to the recommended amount.

Be active on most, if not all days of the week.  Aim for 30-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day, and reduce the amount of time you sit and break periods of sitting wherever possible.
